ResponsibleAg marks first anniversary

ResponsibleAg this month marks its first anniversary, and with that, a number of milestone achievements in support of employee, first responder and community safety. Over the past 12 months ResponsibleAg has enrolled more than 1,800 agricultural retailers. Eighty-five retailers have successfully completed the program's comprehensive audit program and are now fully certified.

ResponsibleAg is an independent auditing organization formed by the fertilizer industry in 2014, to promote public welfare by assisting agribusinesses in complying with federal environmental, health, safety and security rules regarding the safe handling and storage of fertilizer products.

"We are very proud of ResponsibleAg's success during our first year, said Executive Director Bill Qualls.  "The level of engagement from ag retailers has surpassed our expectations and has set ResponsibleAg on a course to quickly become one of the most robust programs of its kind in the nation.

"In a very short time ResponsibleAg has gone from a concept to a robust initiative, placing credentialed auditors in retail facilities and certifying individual locations, continued Qualls. "Having exceeded our goal of registering 1,500 facilities during the first year, we anticipate growing recognition and participation in 2016 and beyond.

ResponsibleAg provides participating retail agribusinesses a federal regulatory compliance assessment related to the safe storage and handling of fertilizers, recommendations for corrective action where needed, and a robust suite of resources to assist in this regard.

ResponsibleAg has compiled a checklist of federal regulatory requirements applicable to the storage and handling of fertilizer. The checklist, developed by a technical committee comprised of industry regulatory professionals, contains more than 320 questions. Auditors credentialed by ResponsibleAg use this checklist to assess compliance with federal regulations at each participating facility.
