In its weekly Agronomy Update video, Asmus Farm Supply (the 2017 ARA Retailer of the Year) provides two timely tips for planning nitrogen application for the next crop.
“This is a good time to look at your soil samples and make plans to get new samples taken,” says Mike Perkins, agronomist and 4R specialist at Asmus Farm Supply.
Perkins also says now is the time to plan ahead for the often tight time window for fall-applied nitrogen and manure.
“A key to application of nitrogen is to keep as much of the nitrogen in the ammonium form as long as possible,” Perkins says. He references a study that shows at 52 degree soil temperatures, 50% of nitrogen is converted to nitrate in six to seven weeks.
And Perkins advises growers who are pursuing fall applied nitrogen and manure ask their retailer about nitrification inhibitors.
“Nitrification inhibitors area tool to help extend your application time window,” he says.
