I-80 Planting Tour IL: 82-Yr-Old Farmer Says Spring Compares To ‘09

I-80 Planting Tour Illinois 052219

It's been a historically slow planting year for farmers in the Corn Belt.

USDA saying Illinois farmers are behind planting. Twenty-four percent of corn in the ground, compared to the 5-year-averagee of 89 percent. Only 9 percent of soybeans are planted, lagging when looking at the 5-year-average of 51 percent.

Over the last 8 weeks, AgDay national reporter Betsy Jibben has followed planting progress, or lack thereof, for our I-80 Planting Tour. Her last stop in Illinois is where one seasoned farmer says this year is unlike just about any he’s seen in more than his 60 years of farming.

She talks with Allen W. Hoffman, a farmer from Gardner, Illinois.
