Ferrie: Some 300-Plus Bushel Corn In Iowa

Boots in the Field Report with Ken Ferrie ( Crop-Tech Consulting )

Ken Ferrie and his agronomic team traveled through parts of Illinois, Iowa and Ohio to assess corn and soybean crops earlier this week. What they found went from one extreme to the other.

Farmers in Defiance County, Ohio, have “miles of fields” that were never planted, Ferrie notes. The county is located in the far northwest corner of the state.

At the other extreme is the area around Waterloo and Cedar Falls, Iowa. “This looks like the sweet spot for Iowa,” says Ferrie, Farm Journal Field Agronomist and owner of Crop-Tech Inc., near Heyworth, Ill. “We saw some fields with 240 bu. to over 300 bu. corn.”

He adds that the June corn there is still about 25 days from black layer, while most of the soybeans are at R5 to R6.
