Weather report: More rain on its way to the Plains

In the West, a resumption of the monsoon is providing much-needed moisture to drought-stricken areas of the Four Corners region. Elsewhere, hot, mostly dry weather favors summer crop development and Northwestern winter wheat maturation and harvesting.

On the Plains, sunny, albeit cool, weather aids spring wheat development in the north. Scattered showers are bringing some relief from heat and dryness to the central and southern Plains.

In the Corn Belt, cool weather continues to benefit reproductive to filling summer crops. Showers are exiting the eastern Ohio Valley, while pockets of unfavorable dryness persist in the western Corn Belt.

In the South, additional showers are maintaining adequate to locally excessive soil moisture for pastures and summer crops following a record-wet July in portions of the region.

Outlook: For the remainder of today, an area of showers associated with a weak disturbance will sweep across the eastern third of the nation. Meanwhile, a stationary upper-air low in eastern Canada will maintain cooler-thannormal conditions from the northern Plains into the Corn Belt and Northeast. In contrast, increasingly hot weather across the south-central U.S. will expand into the Southeast by the weekend. Between these two air masses, a frontal boundary coupled with a series of weak disturbances will generate periods of rain (locally more than 2 inches) from the central Plains into the western and southern Corn Belt. Out west, monsoon showers have expanded in the Four Corners region, although rain amounts are expected to be generally light. Dry, seasonably hot weather will continue in California and the Great Basin. The NWS 6- to 10-day outlook for August 6-10 calls for near- to above-normal rainfall across much of the contiguous U.S. east of the Rockies, except for southern Texas and the upper Great Lakes Region. Near- to above-below rainfall is expected west of the Rockies. Cool weather will continue to dominate a large section of the country from the northern and central Plains to New England, including the Corn Belt. Meanwhile, warmer conditions will prevail in the Pacific Northwest and from the southern Plains to the central Gulf Region.
