Kevin Kephart, vice president of research and economic development at South Dakota State University, explained the history of Edgar McFadden’s wheat research during the Cereal Future Forum 2015 sponsored by Bayer CropScience. McFadden dedicated his life to wheat breeding to combat stem rust, and his work became part of Norman Borlaug’s Green Revolution. Kephart references that McFadden’s success helped win World War II because of the U.S.’s “impressive food production capabilities,” of which wheat was a staple in feeding the armies and liberated populations.
