Seed - 2012
We have had several seed meetings, planning for the 2012 crop, and there are many new varieties available.
Here are a couple of “take-aways”:
1) The number of IDENTICAL varieties sold by different companies keeps increasing!
a) This means that a variety that is sold under a certain name by one company can be EXACTLY the same as a variety sold by a different company.
b) This is important to know, because:
i) You could plant soybeans from several different companies and think that you are diversified and yet they could be the SAME variety!
ii) By knowing this, you can maximize seed discounts!
c) We have compiled an extensive database on this, that we use to select varieties
2) Compare prices carefully
a) Many companies are selling soybean seed by 140,000 count units, but some are still selling 50# units
b) All RR2 soybeans are sold by 140,000 seed count units
3) There is an increased interest in Liberty Link soybeans
4) With breeding programs getting more efficient, the best varieties will “turn-over” more quickly
5) Other herbicide tolerant traits, under development, will give more non-RR options in the future
6) Some fields have high levels of Soybean Cyst Nematode, and we need to plan around that
