RR sugarbeet deregulated

Dennis Berglund  |   August 16, 2012

1)      Here a few of the details:

a)      The environmental assessment found no significant impact, so RR sugarbeets can now be grown without restriction

b)      The safety of the sugar from RR sugarbeet was never an issue

c)       You still need to check your fields for bolters, and remove them from the field

i)        This is required by the Monsanto Technology agreement

ii)       Our sugarbeet co-ops also have best management guidelines that need to be followed

2)      Lastly, continue to monitor for Cercospora leaf spot and apply fungicides, if needed

a)      Make sure you follow the fungicide pre-harvest intervals

As a past weed management consultant in the San Joaquin Valley in the 1990s, it is great
to hear that RR sugarbeet growers are finally using this cost-effective technology. For too
long, decisions by citybound folks with not a lick of sense about agriculture, biochemistry
and pragmatic decision-making has ruled based on numbers of mouthy comments.
