Crop Update 10-12-11
The rains have stopped and we are getting a lot of needed fieldwork done!
1) We are very busy soil sampling
a) Zone Sampling is increasing
b) Soil test results are very variable
c) P tests seem to be coming back a little lower than normal
2) Dry beans and soybeans have been harvested
a) Yields were better than expected, as long as there wasn’t severe water damage
b) We had some White Mold, especially on fields with a history of white mold or fields that were beans last year
3) Sugarbeets
a) The full campaign has started, but harvest has been shutting down during the day, when the beets are too warm to stockpile
b) Yields will be below average
c) We had to handle the RR sugarbeets according to special guidelines, since they are only partially deregulated, and that went pretty well
4) Corn
a) Yields are pretty good
b) Test weight is below average
c) Moisture is lower than the past 2 years
5) Tillage
a) Fieldwork is going well
b) Deep tillage will help compaction from the last two years
c) Vertical tillage will cut up residue and mix it with the soil so that it starts breaking down
