Wheat futures seemed to suffer Friday from the ongoing dollar rally and its potential for curtailing export demand. Other price shifts may simply have reflected the impact of wet weekend forecasts for the central U.S. That is, increased moisture in the west could improve the winter wheat harvest, thereby weighing upon Chicago and Kansas City prices. On the other hand, wet fields in the Northern Plains could slow spring wheat plantings and reduce production prospects for that region. July CBOT wheat futures slipped 4.5 cents to $6.8325/bushel in Friday morning trading, and July KCBT wheat dropped 5.25 to $7.3725, while July MGE futures were unchanged at $8.0375.

Syngenta and Buck Semillas have entered into a collaboration agreement under which both parties will exchange genetics, utilizing technology platforms and know-how to develop new wheat varieties.

By combining Buck Semilla’s locally adapted genetics and Syngenta’s industry-leading technology and global germplasm pool, the collaboration will deliver new varieties that will offer a higher yield and quality potential to Argentinean wheat farmers. The option to include these varieties in Syngenta´s integrated wheat offers will help farmers to realize this new genetic potential and to sustain Argentina’s leading position in wheat production in South America.

“Syngenta is committed to transforming wheat production worldwide as a key driver to global food security,” said Florian Wagner, Syngenta Head of Cereals for Latin America South. “This collaboration with Buck Semillas ensures that Argentina has access to the best wheat breeding technologies. In addition, it gives us the opportunity to offer to the wheat farmer in Argentina innovative, complete solutions, which are crucial to maintain local crop competitiveness in the future.”

”Our strategy since the 1930s is breeding wheat varieties to consistently improve our offer to Argentinean farmers” said Hilda Buck, President of Buck Semillas. “In 2011 alone we have launched three new varieties that are the result of a previous material exchange agreement with Syngenta.
