Nematode management increases soybean yield

Globally, soybean growers lose $157 billion in annual harvests from plant-parasitic nematodes, according to Louisiana State University researchers. Planting resistant varieties and using an effective nematicide has been shown to help improve soybean yields. The Ohio State University Extension suggests additional measures, such as soil sampling and non-host crop rotation, to help manage nematode populations.

“Syngenta continues to build upon solutions for nematode protection, offering NK soybeans featuring built-in resistance to the soybean cyst nematode (SCN), among other nematode species,” said Scott Erickson, head of soybean seed product management for Syngenta. “For the 2014 season, 15 new varieties of NK soybeans include resistance to SCN.”

In addition, Syngenta offers seed treatments tailored to specific nematode problems in the Midwest and South.

“We offer Midwest growers Clariva Complete Beans nematicide/insecticide/fungicide, a combination of separately registered products with a revolutionary nematicide that provides season-long activity against SCN,” said Wouter Berkhout, soybean seedcare product lead for Syngenta. “Clariva Complete Beans also features the market-leading, broad-spectrum seed treatment of CruiserMaxx Beans with Vibrance insecticide/fungicide to provide growers with the potential for an improved return on investment they will realize at harvest.”

For Southern states, Syngenta offers Avicta Complete Beans 500 nematicide/insecticide/fungicide seed treatment applied with Vibrance seed treatment fungicide to protect against a broad spectrum of nematodes, insects and diseases.

Customers who purchase the 2014 Syngenta-treated soybeans will now see a next-generation red seed. The new colorant reaffirms the Syngenta commitment to provide high-performance seed treatments on NK soybeans.

No matter the location, researchers recommend growers know their fields’ histories when selecting a seed variety in an effort to help increase yield. SCN is a sleeper pest, as soybeans appear normal until yield loss shows up at harvest, according to North Dakota State University Extension researchers.

Growers can count on a full portfolio of nematode management solutions from Syngenta in order to help their soybean crops start strong.
