Afternoon Comments 06/18

Although the U.S. soybean situation is very tight, nearby July CBOT futures declined in apparent response to an Oil World forecast of significant imports during early summer. In contrast, talk that global exports will be unable to meet demand later in the year, as well as news of a sizeable new-crop sale to China, supported the deferred contracts Tuesday. July soybean futures declined 1.75 cents to $15.1075/bushel as Tuesday trading wound down, whereas July soyoil slid 0.03 cents to 48.81 cents/pound; July soybean meal gained $2.7 to $451.8/ton.

Dow AgroSciences LLC and M.S. Technologies LLC have unveiled Enlist E3 soybeans as the brand name for the industry’s first-ever, three-gene herbicide-tolerant soybean. This advanced technology was submitted for U.S. regulatory approval in August 2011 and is anticipated to be launched in 2015 pending U.S. and import country approvals. Enlist E3 soybeans will be brought to market in high-yielding varieties, widely available in multiple brands for farmers who want improved weed control and high yields.

The Enlist E3 soybean event developed by the companies includes, for the first time, three herbicide-tolerance genes stacked together as part of a single genetic event in the soybean genome. These genes provide tolerance to Dow AgroSciences’ new 2,4-D product, glyphosate and glufosinate. Enlist E3 soybeans will be another product offering in the Enlist Weed Control System.

“Enlist E3 soybeans will set the new standard for weed control and yield performance in soybeans,” said Lauren August, M.S. Technologies. “This first-ever three-gene stack event has been packaged in high-yielding elite germplasm from M.S. Technologies which, when combined, will allow growers to maximize per acre profits.”

“Farmers need solutions for ever-increasing weed challenges, and Enlist E3 soybeans will enable exceptional weed control delivered from the Enlist system, combined with the latest advancement in soybean technology,” said Tom Wiltrout, Seeds and Traits Strategy Leader, Dow AgroSciences. “Enlist E3 soybeans will be offered throughout the industry, providing seed companies and soybean growers another choice to advance their weed control and deliver improved yields.”
