A bacterial signal that when recognized by rice plants enables the plants to resist a devastating blight disease has been identified by a multi-national team of researchers led by scientists with the U.S. Department of Energy (DOE)’s Joint BioEnergy Institute (JBEI) and the University of California (UC) Davis.
A new app for estimating soybean yields is now available from K-State Research and Extension. KSUSoyYieldCalc is a native Android application that helps with yield estimation of soybeans before harvest following the conventional approach of counting or estimating plant populations, pods per plant, seeds per pod, and seed size.
Farmers applying granulated elemental sulfur may be waiting an entire cropping cycle before their crops get the sulfur they need - a problem that could be costing them yield and money. Sulfur is a vital component of chlorophyll and a wide range of amino acids, enzymes and proteins required for plant growth, but can only be taken up by plants in the sulfate sulfur form. Elemental sulfur must be oxidized into sulfate, a process carried out by soil bacteria that chemically combines sulfur atoms with oxygen and water, before it is available to crops.
A significant effort to sequence a large number of soybean germplasm lines in the U.S. is underway. This project, titled “Large Scale Sequencing of Germplasm to Develop Genomic Resources for Soybean Improvement”, is being funded by the United Soybean Board and three private companies: Bayer CropScience, DOW AgroSciences, LLC, and Monsanto.

The 2015 Illinois corn crop continues to develop on schedule, with 75% of the crop having reached silking by July 19. But the crop condition rating continues its steady downward trend, with the good + excellent percentage now at 55%, down from its high of 79% at the end of May. Virtually all of this decline is due to standing water, past or present.
