Company calls it root focus for higher yield

With the season wrapping up after one of the worst droughts on record, we can finally breathe a sigh of relief that this stressful year is behind us. As we begin to prepare for next year, one lesson learned from this past season is the importance of growing a soybean crop that can handle environmental stress. And while this season may have brought extra stress upon both growers and their soybeans, preparing for next season is the best way to help make the 2013 growing season a success.
According to the United Soybean Board, the soybean root system is often overlooked when evaluating the health of a plant under stress and can be blamed for 70 to 80 percent of plant disorders. However, with more and more research pointing to root health as the key for improving soybean yield, Syngenta has turned its attention below the soil surface.
“After such a dry season, it’s only become more evident that a healthy root system is an integral part of a successful yield,” said David Winston, seedcare brand asset lead, Syngenta. “Soybean roots are responsible for absorbing large amounts of moisture and nutrients that are essential for plant growth. So, in dry years when soybeans are faced with increased environmental stress, a healthy root system is even more important.”
In addition to the environmental stressors that impact root systems, early-season insects and diseases can inflict damage on soybean roots as well. Weakened root systems impact a plant’s ability to efficiently absorb water and nutrients. These damaging factors leave stressed soybeans at an even greater disadvantage.
Syngenta says it has the insecticide/fungicide, a combination of separately registered products, for application with a new fungicide seed treatment to help soybeans withstand environmental stress through unmatched disease and insect protection.
