Early planting and 2015 corn yield prospects: How much of an increase?

As is the case in most years, there has been no shortage of discussion and analysis this spring of the potential impact of the timeliness of corn planting on yield prospects. Each effort tends to bring a slightly different perspective to the topic.


Frost injury to soybean

Soybean planting and emergence is well ahead of the 5-year average, leaving the crop more vulnerable to early season frost events. Temperatures dropped into the low 30s and upper 20s (F) this week in the west-central and northwestern parts of the state, likely resulting in some degree of frost injury to emerged soybeans in select areas.


Soybean response to standing water and saturated soils

How will soybeans respond to standing water and saturated soil conditions? If soybean plants are submerged for less than 48 hours, there is a good chance they will survive. Plants can survive under water longer under cool than warm temperatures. Submerged soybean plants can survive for up to 7 days when temperatures are less than 80 degrees F.
