Sidedressed nitrogen offers reassurance

As this spring’s wet weather proved, unstabilized nitrogen is vulnerable to leaching and dentrification, which can significantly reduce the yield potential of corn. By applying a nitrogen sidedress application, growers can rest easier knowing their corn plants have nitrogen when it’s most needed, said Chris Berry, market developer, Dow AgroSciences.

Soil temperatures generally are warm during the sidedressing period, requiring a nitrogen stabilizer to protect ammonium nitrogen from rapid nitrification. The surplus of rain this spring also can lead to increased leaching and dentirification. As corn producers are looking for immediate solutions for their fields, they still can stabilize their fertilizer with Instinct nitrogen stabilizer as a postplant application prior to the V6 growth stage. Growers can use N-Serve nitrogen stabilizer as a sidedress application with anhydrous ammonia until 30 days after planting. The result is less nitrogen lost to leaching and denitrification and more nitrogen available later in the season for grain production.

Growers should apply additional nitrogen earlier rather than later in crop development, if possible, according to “The Bulletin,” developed by University of Illinois Extension. When applying nitrogen as a sidedress application, “The Bulletin” suggests some methods are better than others:

  • First preference: Inject or dribble UAN solution between rows.
  • Second preference: Broadcast solid ammonium-containing fertilizers.
  • Third preference: Broadcast UAN solution.

Regarding the N application between the rows may be reconsidered as maize is a wide row crop.The application may be made along the rows keeping a safe distance to avoid direct contact of applied N with the plants.

The leaching losses of applied N can be reduced by making ridges (on the crop rows) and furrows ( between the rows) by using ridge and furrow maker, just after N application.
