Is the corn crop overestimated?

The USDA's October 9 Crop Production report forecast the 2015 U.S. corn crop at 13.555 billion bushels, 30 million bushels smaller than the September forecast and 660 million bushels smaller than the 2014 crop. The U.S. average corn yield is forecast at 168 bushels, 0.5 bushel above the September forecast, and harvested acreage is forecast at 80.664 million, 437,000 below the September forecast.


Marestail, hemlock focus of fall applications

With the grain harvest progressing on or ahead of schedule in most parts of Indiana, no-till producers should start thinking now about their fall herbicide applications, a Purdue Extension weed specialist says. The focus this year should be on managing marestail, dandelion and poison hemlock in corn and soybean fields, said Bill Johnson, professor of weed science.

U.S. ethanol producers looking at thin profit margins for 2015-16

Following 18 months of record earnings, the U.S. ethanol industry has rebalanced in 2015. As energy prices collapsed in late 2014, so did ethanol prices and plant margins. However, ethanol's supply and demand has remained well balanced, and producers have maintained positive earnings, according to a new report from CoBank.


How do I know if tar spot is in my field?

A few weeks ago, tar spot, a new disease of corn caused by the fungus Phyllachora maydis was reported for the first time in the US, first in Indiana and then in Illinois. It was later found as far east as Allen County, Indiana, bordering Paulding County in northwest Ohio. So, although tar spot has not yet been confirmed in Ohio, it is quite possible that it may be present in the northwestern corner of the state.
