Despite a solid start to the 2013 harvest, weather and crop maturity woes continue to slow corn and soybean harvest.
According to the USDA’s latest “Crop Progress” report, just 12 percent of corn have been harvest, compared to 7 percent last week and the five-year average of 23 percent.
Last year more than half of the nation’s had already been harvested.
However, nearly two-thirds of corn has reached the maturity, putting it 13 percentage points above last week’s report. It is still below the five-year average of 70 percent.
Corn conditions changed little this week – 16 percent of corn is considered in poor or worse condition. Many of the states with the highest percentages of struggling corn reported little to no improvement in their crop conditions, including Colorado (24 percent), Iowa (26 percent), Kansas (30 percent), Missouri (24 percent) and Wisconsin (25 percent).
The report showed similar results for the nation’s soybean crop. Maturity is lagging behind while harvest is nearly half of the five-year average. Currently 11 percent of soybeans have been harvested, compared to 3 percent last week.
Soybean conditions improved slightly this week. Nationally, 53 percent of soybeans are in good or better condition, compared to 50 percent last week. Missouri and Iowa reported 29 and 27 percent of soybeans in poor or very poor condition respectively – the highest reported in the country.
