This IPM in the South blog post covers how a University of Arkansas trial demonstrated how quickly an entire field can be taken over by Palmer amaranth. For the study, university scientists spread 20,000 Palmer amaranth seeds in a one square meter area in a field. This was to represent a conservative estimate of seed dispersal from one single Palmer amaranth plant (in 2007). There was no previous history or Palmer amaranth infestation. Within two years, the Palmer had infested 95% of the field. This led researchers to recommend the No Tolerance approach for managing this weed. A single escape is too much.
