Ag retailers must be ready for Aug. 17 changes

The Mid America CropLife Association (MACA) last week held the Mini-Bulk Summit-Part 2.  More than 100 people attended and participated in the summit representing more than 55 entities and 24 states, but thousands of ag retailers still might not be ready for enforcement of new packaging and container regulations going into effect Aug. 17.

The worry is a major concern, according to some of the attendees, who reported fielding questions as June began. State agri-business associations and crop protection manufacturers said they are being asked about all the mini-bulks from previous years and new ones coming packed with new product this year.    

Although attending the summit would have been the best for answering questions and hearing the facts, some information can be obtained by checking out the presentations on PowerPoint slides. A copy of the presentations and handouts has been posted on the MACA Web site.

Key points per MACA are:

• The industry has several initiatives in place to meet the new rules and regulations.
• While a few questions remain... U.S. EPA was quite clear. These rules will become effective Aug. 17, 2011, and there will be no extensions. MACA will continue to update its Web site as the final questions are addressed by EPA. Continue to check the MACA Web site for updates.
• Please help to get the word out to everyone in the industry. August is rapidly approaching.
