Helena withdraws plans for Nebraska fertilizer plant
Helena Chemical Company has notified Madison County, Nebraska, officials that it is withdrawing its application to construct a fertilizer facility near Norfolk.
John Johnson, County Planning and Zoning Administrator confirmed Helena officials sent letters to the land owners of the proposed site. The letter stated that the company was no longer interested in the property.
Helena leaders told Johnson that they still plan to build a fertilizer facility in Madison County in the future. A new site has not been chosen, however.
It is speculated that the deal fell through because of a controversy over requirements that determine how far away a fertilizer plant must be from the nearest residence. The county plans to go through with a second consultant in case future companies wish to build on the original site.
