Ag retailers were reminded of upcoming requirements for Tier 4 engines by Chamila Tissera, an emissions engineer at Deutz Corporation, at the recent Agricultural Retailers Association 2010 Convention and Expo.

Tissera explained that the Tier 4 requirements will impact original equipment manufacturers costs to build the new engines. "OEM's will have to redesign the engine compartment with a 50 percent to 90 percent cost increase expected. However, the transition for the operator should be seamless," Tissera said. "Equipment costs for retailers will increase as will the need to replace more fluids, which will also increase their costs."

Tier 4 engines are being introduced in tractors first, but applicator engines will follow soon. Case IH has shipped the world's first tractor with a Tier 4 engine.
