The Agricultural Retailers Association announced that Senator Pat Roberts (R-Kan.) is this year's recipient of the ARA Legislator of the Year Award. Roberts is a long-time advocate for the ag retail industry, and was recognized during the 2008 ARA Conference & Exposition on Dec. 3 at the Hilton Austin Hotel in Texas. This award is given annually to a legislator that has worked closely with ARA in helping to champion legislation that is important to the ag retail industry.
"Senator Roberts has been a solid, sensible leader in Congress; reaching across the political aisle to craft legislation important to the American people," said Jack Eberspacher, ARA president & CEO. "He is recognized as a strong supporter of the ag retail industry and agriculture in general. We are proud to recognize his valued leadership."
"I thank ARA and its members for this honor. Our agriculture retailers play a vital role in our agriculture economy and in supporting our farmers and ranchers," Roberts said. "I am pleased to support common sense policies that aid them in this service, and I look forward to continuing our partnership together."
Roberts sponsored the Agricultural Chemicals Security Credit provision (Section 15343 of P.L. 110-234) that provides much needed tax relief for agricultural retailers, distributors and other eligible agricultural businesses to improve on-site security of their pesticide and fertilizer storage facilities and reduce potential threats from terrorists, drug dealers or other criminals.
In addition, Tom Warner, Crop Production Services, received a Distinguished Service Award and Ron E. Stutsman, Eldon C. Stutsman, Inc. and Neil Strong, Syngenta, each received a Lifetime Achievement Award from ARA.
