The Codex Alimentarius Commission set new rules last week on several food safety issues. The commission decided animal manure should not be used to fertilizer lettuce and other fresh vegetables sold as "ready to eat." It also said melamine, which tainted Chinese milk, is only acceptable in minute amounts.


The food safety body set the levels of melamine in food at 1 mg per 1 kg of powered infant formula and 2.5 mg per 1 kg of other food and feeds.
