A federal survey of adult grasshoppers conducted last fall indicates that parts of Wyoming, Montana, South Dakota, North Dakota, Nebraska and Idaho could face a large grasshopper infestation this summer.

Young grasshoppers are expected to hatch around May and June, but the population could be muted if cool, wet weather hits at the same time. In the meantime, farmers are scrambling to prepare for the cost of battling this potential outbreak.
