The House Agriculture Committee and the House Transportation and Infrastructure Committee approved legislation introduced by Rep. Bob Gibbs (R-Ohio) that would eliminate the need for applicators to obtain NPDES permits for pesticide applications made to water, according to the Agricultural Retailers Association. The approval of this legislation in the committees of FIFRA and Clean Water Act jurisdiction is the first in a series of steps the legislation must go through before clearing Congress.

Supporters of the legislation are working to secure support by all House Republicans and 55 Democrats so that the legislation is eligible for consideration on the House floor under expedited procedures. While Senator Stabenow (D-Mich.), Chair Senate Agriculture Committee, has requested EPA to ask the court for more time to implement the NPDES program, companion legislation in the Senate has not yet been introduced. ARA is urging retailers to contact your Representative and encourage them to support and co-sign HR 872.
