Gheen Irrigation Works of Eugene, Ore., has acquired the manufacturing assets of Lake Company in Eugene, Ore., and Lubbock, Texas, for an undisclosed amount. The acquisition became effective Nov. 28.

Gheen Irrigation Works, manufacturers of irrigation fittings and components since 1933, employs approximately 65 full-time workers and up to 30 additional seasonal workers. Lake Company's Eugene operation has about 20 full-time employees and up to 20 additional seasonal workers.

A fire last April destroyed Gheen's 40,000-square-foot manufacturing plant on Willagillespie Road in Eugene. Soon after the fire, Lake Company began helping Gheen maintain production from Lake's Airport Road headquarters. Since that time, nearly all Gheen's pre-fire positions have been refilled to meet customer demand.

"The acquisition is a positive development resulting from our collaboration with Gheen Irrigation these past eight months," notes Robert Lake, chief financial officer of Western Oilfields Supply Company, parent of Lake Company. "The transaction will benefit customers by capitalizing on our mutual strengths and expertise in the field of irrigation equipment manufacturing."

"This acquisition will secure Gheen's position as a world leader in the side roll irrigation equipment market and as the top provider of steel fittings for irrigation," says Robert Gheen, third generation owner and president of Gheen Irrigation Works.

No decision has been made on the eventual location of the newly merged company, according to Gheen. He notes that the acquisition is part of his company's continued overall expansion. "In addition to the 20 Lake Company employees who will join our operations, we are continually looking for skilled welders, machinists and production workers," he adds.
