Senate Democrats on Thursday abandoned plans to pass an energy bill that caps emissions of carbon dioxide.


The Democrats blame the bill's failure on the lack of Republican support, but Democrats were also having trouble with some of their own members signing on to the bill.


Instead Senate Majority Leader Harry Reid said he and other Democrats would focus on a smaller, narrower bill that some are calling "Cap and Trade lite" that would respond to the oil spill in the Gulf of Mexico and improve energy efficiency.
