The use of methyl iodide on California agricultural fields is being challenged by Central Coast Assemblyman Bill Monning (D-Carmel), who claims the pesticide is more toxic than methyl bromide, which was phased out due to its action as an ozone depleter.

Methyl iodide is manufacturered by Arysta LifeScience and has been approved in 47 states and six countries. It is used mainly on strawberries.
