Drift reduced by Enlist 2,4-D product
When the Enlist Weed Control System is launched by Dow AgroSciences for crop production, much of its value will depend on the success of the company’s Enlist herbicide featuring the new Colex-D Technology for a new 2,4-D choline.
New data shared by Dow AgroSciences scientists at the Weed Science Society of America’s (WSSA) national meeting Feb. 6-9 in Waikoloa, Hawaii, showed “a three-fold reduction of the amount of physical herbicide drift” compared to current 2,4-D technology products. More than a dozen research summaries from the company were the basis for the claim. Components of the Enlist system have not yet received regulatory approvals.
Dow AgroSciences has developed the new Colex-D Technology formulation along with a proprietary manufacturing process.
“The Colex-D Technology package will provide farmers with new benefits such as ultra-low volatility, minimized potential for drift, deceased odor and improved handling characteristics,” the company explained during the WSSA meeting. Dow AgroSciences researchers presented details about volatization or vapor loss. “Field studies with 2,4-D choline found that vapor loss was reduced to less than 0.5 percent, making it 50 to over 1,000 percent lower compared to loss with traditional forms of 2,4-D,” Dow AgroSciences presenters explained.
The Enlist System for crop production includes trait crop tolerance to the new 2,4-D product, and corn tolerance has been under study for the past two years. Multiple applications of twice the anticipated use rate of “the Enlist herbicide solution” have been tested extensively, presenters noted.
