Agrium sees purchase of Viterra farm stores in early '13

The monthly cattle on feed report showed placements down sharply, but near expectations. Placements during October were 87.5 percent of a year ago, right at the prerelease trade average. However, at only 2.18 million head, placements were the lowest total for October in the large lot data base to 1996. All weight categories for placements were down, but the under 600 pound category was down the most which is a bit more positive for the April and June fed cattle contracts. This marks the fifth consecutive year-over-year monthly decline in placements. As a result, placements are down 1.26 million head or 11.5 percent over the five month period compared to 2011.

PotashCorp remains optimistic about 2013 demand
After a lackluster third quarter for most potash manufacturers followed by announcements of temporary mine closures this winter, PotashCorp announced it expects global shipments of potash to rebound in 2013 to between 57 million and 58 million tonnes. Full story.

Corn, soybean prices following short-crop pattern
USDA’s November forecasts of the size of the 2012 U.S. corn and soybean crops were larger than expected, particularly for soybeans. As a result, the general downtrend in soybean prices since mid-September has accelerated, with January futures now at the lowest level since June 29. Full story.
