BIG PICTURE
By Doane Economist
On Sept. 7, Statistics Canada released official ending stocks estimates for the just completed July 31 crop years. Wheat and canola stocks were on the low side of expectations, but not major surprises. Canada's canola ending stocks were marginally greater than the official Canadian forecast, but still very low. Canada reports the stocks totaled 787,700 tonnes. These represent the fewest stocks since 1998/99 at 655,000 tonnes. In light of the global limits on oilseed production, it would appear that there will be strong demand for the 2012 crop and its ending stocks in 2013 will also be light. Canada’s wheat ending stocks were 5.879 mmt. That compares closely to Agri-Food Canada's August forecast at 6.0 mmt.

Fertilizer needs for wheat following a drought
As preparations are made for planting the 2013 wheat crop, growers should consider how the 2012 drought might impact their fertilizer needs. There is a strong possibility that there will excess (carryover or residual) N in the soil profile after the 2012 corn crop is harvested because the corn was too affected by drought to use all of the applied N.
