Syngenta AG reported an 84 percent increase in full-year net profit on Thursday, helped by strong demand for its crop protection products in Europe and Latin America.

The Swiss-based company said net profit almost doubled to US$460 million from $250 million a year earlier. Syngenta reports profits only for the half year and full year.

Sales rose 11 percent to $7.27 billion from $6.53 billion. Analysts had forecast full-year sales of $7.34 billion.

Sales at the company's core crop protection unit rose 11 percent to $6.03 billion, boosted by an 18 percent sales increase for fungicides.

Sales at its smaller seeds business unit rose 12 percent to $1.24 billion, driven by high demand for its vegetables and flower seeds in Europe, Africa and the Middle East.
