GREELEY, Colo. - Swift & Company's Wednesday statement this week acknowledged the temporary suspension of beef products from its Greeley facility on March 11, 2006, by the Hong Kong government's Food and Environmental Hygiene Department.

Swift said the shipment that arrived in Hong Kong on March 10 did not contain any specified risk material (SRM) and therefore did not present a food safety issue, but presented a minor quality issue which falls within acceptable tolerances under the U.S.-Hong Kong Beef Export Verification Program.

"We believe that the USDA will clear this issue with the Hong Kong government shortly," the statement concluded.

With nearly $10 billion in annual sales, Swift & Company is the world's second-largest processor of fresh beef and pork. Founded in 1855 and headquartered in Greeley, Colorado, Swift processes, prepares, packages, markets, and delivers fresh, further processed and value-added beef and pork products to customers in the United States and international markets.
