OTTAWA, ONTARIO -- A new International Energy Agency report confirms that new efficiencies in farming and production techniques show corn ethanol dramatically reduces harmful greenhouse gas emissions (GHGs) - moving toward 55% cuts by 2015 - when compared to gasoline.



Highlights of the recently released IEA report, 'Examination of the Potential for Improving Carbon/Energy Balance of Bioethanol,' include:


  • GHG reductions over gasoline will more than double by 2015 -- "The GHG emissions savings from ethanol and use have more than doubled between 1995 and the projected level in 2015."
  • Energy balance of ethanol continues to improve; gasoline declines -- "The gasoline energy balance is projected to continue to decline as more synthetic crude oil is incorporated into the refining state. The ethanol energy balance continues to improve as efficiency gains are made both the feedstock production and ethanol manufacturing."
  • Positive trend for corn similar for wheat and other feedstocks -- "It is likely that the same directional trend would be found for other feedstocks such as sugar cane, wheat, and sugar beet. All crops are likely benefitting from improvements found in the agricultural sector, and some of the improvements in the ethanol production process (such as improved enzymes) are generic in nature and applicable to all feedstocks."
