DES MOINES -- Three new alfalfa products that meet regional needs highlight the product offerings from Pioneer Hi-Bred International Inc. for the 2007 planting season.
Pioneer(R) brand varieties 54R02, 53H92 and 54V09 offer growers specific traits and resistance packages for various growing environments and conditions.
"These new products are directed at specific markets," says says Gene Gengelbach. "We listened to what growers wanted in specific regions and used technology and resources to bring alfalfa products with the most-wanted traits -- winter hardiness, disease and pest resistance, and yield."
Additionally, the alfalfa research team continues to look for new ways to use both existing and new technologies to enhance product offerings to growers across all regions.
"We started out with 54R01 as our first variety with Roundup Ready technology in 2006 and added 54R02 in '07," Gengelbach says. "54R01 is a high-forage-quality product, and with 54R02 with Roundup Ready technology, you get higher yield potential with good pest resistance and field appearance. This helps broaden our product offerings to growers."
The new additions to the Pioneer alfalfa product line continue to increase value to regional alfalfa growers, specifically with high performance in disease resistance and winter hardiness. These traits help ensure growers will have clean, high-yielding alfalfa stands that will remain productive for a number of years.
"We realize that when growers plant alfalfa, they want lasting performance," Gengelbach says. "So, we want to provide products growers will be as happy with three or four years down the road as they are the first year they plant them."
