Nitrogen’s elusive behavior makes it challenging to produce top yields while minimizing the escape of nitrates. But understanding how soil influences the presence or absence of nitrogen in the growing season will make fertilizer programs more cost-effective while safeguarding water quality.

“Managing nitrogen means supplying the difference between what the crop needs and the amount the soil supplies, and doing it at the right time,” explains Farm Journal Field Agronomist Ken Ferrie.
