The U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA) has issued updated guidance that the agency says will help them respond quickly and accurately to food-related emergencies.

The guidance, available at the FDA website, updates food product categories that companies can select when registering their food facilities with the agency, according to a news release.

Additional food product categories for Foods for Human Consumption include several related to fruits and vegetables, including:

  • Fruit and fruit products:
  • Fresh-cut produce;
  • Raw agricultural commodities;
  • Fruit or vegetable juice, pulp or concentrate products; and
  • Vegetable and vegetable product categories.

Information about the categories of food a facility manufactures or distributes currently helps the FDA conduct investigations and surveillance operations in response to food-related emergencies, according to the release. These categories also help the agency to quickly alert facilities potentially affected by such an incident if the FDA receives information indicating the type of food affected.
