Requirements for advanced biofuels have been issued by the Environmental Protection Agency (EPA). The list still includes 800 million gallons of biomass-based diesel. But the
requirement for cellulosic ethanol is set at only 6.6 million gallons, which is far below the original 250 million gallon target set by Congress for 2011! (The necessary technology
and infrastructure for competitive cellulosic ethanol production hasn’t kept pace with expectations by Congress.) In all, a total of 1.35 billion gallons of advanced biofuels will be
required for 2011, in addition to the corn-based ethanol mandated under the RFS.
