In the southern Brazil state of Parana, officials in the capital city of Curitiba will test a 100 percent biodisesel fuel in a small number of city buses beginning in April 2008. The manager of the transportation bureau expects the fuel to provide environmental benefits. Interest in biodiesel is growing in Brazil where the industry is relatively new. In January 2008, the government will require a 2 percent biodiesel mix in all of Brazil's diesel fuel. Annual diesel consumption is roughly 800 million liters. In addition to the mandatory 2 percent mix beginning in 2008, Brazil has passed legislation making 5 percent biodiesel mix mandatory in all diesel fuel by 2013. Government ministers have considered moving that date forward to 2010.
