NEW YORK -- Prism Business Media's BEEF(R) magazine has launched www.AmericanCowman.com, a new Web site focused on the needs and interests of smaller beef operations with fewer than 100 head of cattle.

This underserved market consists of more than 700,000 part-time cattle growers, representing 85 percent of the nation's producers. In addition to its coverage of animal health, the site features articles on facilities, nutrition, pasture and range management and genetics, as well as related business and lifestyle resources.

Plans for AmericanCowman.com call for the ongoing addition of new content over the course of the coming year, as well as the August 9th launch of American Cowman Update, a twice-monthly e-newsletter that will deliver timely industry news, practical production and management strategies, and producer profiles designed to help small family farms remain viable.

AmericanCowman.com is a direct outgrowth of an extensive research project conducted by Prism, in cooperation with Pfizer Animal Health, surveying the needs and interests of this market, including information resources, purchasing behaviors, and use of the Internet. Almost 90 percent of survey respondents indicated interest in an online product, designed for family-owned cow operations, with both a business and a rural lifestyle focus.

"This is just the beginning of an entirely new product which has great potential," said Bret Kealy, group publisher. "AmericanCowman.com fills a niche in the marketplace that has long been underserved, bringing smaller producers specific information designed to help them in their operations. Our research demonstrated that an online product is the best way to reach this large and diverse audience -- more than 50 percent of those surveyed already have high-speed access to the Web, and more than 80 percent of the group utilize the Web to stay informed about the cattle business."

The site offers a production management "tip of the week," as well as industry news and new products and lifestyle information on everything from beef recipes, to consumer trends, to a column for ranchers over the age of 50. Content also includes links to breed associations, industry organizations, youth resources, markets and weather information.

Pfizer Animal Health is the charter site sponsor, with exclusive sponsorship of the health category. BEEF is currently in discussion with a number of other sponsorship prospects.

BEEF, America's leading cattle publication, publishes 12 monthly issues for cow/calf operators, stocker-growers, cattle feeders, veterinarians, nutritionists and allied industries, and provides a wide variety of industry news and information online at www.beef-mag.com.
