Cover crops needed on prevented planting acres

Excessive rainfall and prolonged ponding conditions this spring have resulted in many fields remaining unplanted to corn or soybeans this season in some areas of the country. These “prevented planting” acres, while unfortunate for this year’s production, should be managed in ways to prevent further soil degradation and to increase soil productivity for next year.

Much of this attention focuses on Missouri, Kansas, Kentucky, Tennessee, and North Carolina. Some of these states have had large prevented acres in past years.

Combustible grain dust prevention workshop July 28

Kansas State University will offer a combustible grain dust prevention workshop teaching advanced mitigation methods on July 28 from 1 p.m. to 4 p.m. in Kansas City, Mo., prior to the Elevator Design Conference co-sponsored by the National Grain and Feed Association and Grain Journal. The workshop is free and will be hosted at the Westin Kansas City at Crown Center.
