Argentine farmers have finished collecting the 2004-05 wheat harvest, the Agriculture Secretariat reported Monday.

The harvest totaled 16 million metric tons. In total, farmers collected 6,055,120 hectares. Planted area totaled 6.233 million hectares, up from 6.04 million hectares a year earlier, according to the Secretariat.

According to the Buenos Aires Cereals Exchange, collectible area totaled 6.09 million hectares and production was 16.3 million metric tons. The average yield was 2.74 tons per hectare, the exchange said.

The U.S. Department of Agriculture has forecast Argentina's 2004-05 wheat output at 16 million tons. According to the Secretariat, Argentina produced 14.56 million tons of 2003-04 wheat.
