The USDA Crop Progress report released July 29 proved favorable for corn farmers. The report shows that overall corn conditions remained unchanged from last week, but wet weather have improved conditions for some states.

Sixty-three percent of total acres of corn are rated in good to excellent condition. The Daily Livestock Report indicates that the overall crop condition is significantly higher than it was in 2012 and is 3 percentage points higher than the 10-year average.

Kansas, Colorado, and Missouri are suffering poor corn conditions due to the high levels of drought in the region. However, soaking rain helped ease the drought in the region, giving corn conditions a much-needed boost.

Meanwhile, the corn crop in Kentucky, Pennsylvania and Tennessee is flourishing thanks mainly to rainfall. Over 80 percent of the corn crop in these three states received either a good or an excellent rating for this month.

Corn maturity is lagging over much of the nation, with just 8 percent of corn entering the dough stage. This is less than half of the five-year average and 27 percentage points below last year’s report.

Soybean conditions, however, faltered a bit this past month. According to the Daily Livestock Report, 63 percent of soybean conditions received a good or an excellent rating, a 1 percent decline since last month.

The same conditions helping the corn crop are supporting the soybeans in Kentucky and Tennessee. Both states boast either a good or an excellent rating for over 80 percent of their soybean crop. The inclement conditions hurting the corn crop in Kansas and Missouri are also hurting soybeans.
