Solutions for clean fields and high yields presented

Bryan Young, Ph.D., associate professor of weed science at Purdue University, shared his expertise on managing tough-to-control weeds at last week's Commodity Classic, America’s largest farmer-led, farmer-focused convention and trade show. The educational session, sponsored by BASF, offered diverse weed management strategies that can improve weed control and maintain a grower’s profitability.
 
“Increasing yield and reducing risk are top-of-mind for growers, and a proactive weed management strategy is a proven solution,” said Young. “By incorporating overlapping sites of action and preemerge weed control with the use of residual herbicides, a grower can really improve weed control and return on investment.”
 
Young has been studying and researching weed resistance and has published multiple benchmark studies regarding glyphosate-resistant weeds in the United States for more than a decade. Some of the highlights of today’s presentation included the important difference between a herbicide site of action versus a mode of action and why this matters to growers, discovering the role that rotating multiple sites of action plays in developing an effective weed management program and discussing the importance of overlapping effective sites of action to reduce the risk of developing weed resistance.
 
“Herbicides can be grouped by their site of action in the weed, and the site of action is a core aspect for our challenges today with herbicide-resistant weeds,” said Young. “Growers who maintain a knowledge base and resources on combating our greatest weed problems, use a diverse portfolio of herbicide products and implement a comprehensive weed management program have the greatest chance of obtaining clean fields and high yields.”
