A bill being considered by the Ohio Senate would require operations to be certified to apply fertilizers in the state. The Ohio Senate recently approved the bill, which would require the Ohio Department of Agriculture to require a fertilizer applicator certification program in the state.

Senate Bill 150 was designed by Sen. Cliff Hite and Sen. Bob Peterson to address the program of agricultural nutrient runoff into the Ohio waterways and the algae blooms in the Grand Lake St. Marys and Lake Erie.

The bill aims at developing new education for farmers about fertilizer and nutrient use best practices.
