New seed company opening in Indiana
Founder of Funk Seed, Bill Funk, is using a new business model to combat the mass confusion growers go through when purchasing seed corn. This unique model will allow corn growers to not only know more about the varieties they are buying, but also pre-select the type of seed they want before it is produced in the production field.
According to Bill Funk, “The new production plan will not only allow growers to maximize profits, but also provide clarification on what they are planting. Many growers are unaware of what they are really purchasing when it comes to seed corn. They don’t know the hybrid’s background, who grew it, the conditions it was grown under, and most importantly, how pure it is. This information just isn’t available to growers today. Funk Seed will change that by bringing clarity and putting control of the purchase process back in the hands of growers.”
Growers will be able to track their seed from the moment it is planted in the production field, all of the way through detasseling and harvest. Once harvested, their seed will undergo a battery of test that include genetic purity, trait purity, vigor, germination, seed protectant loading rate and more. All of these tests will provide growers with the most important piece of information needed for any seed to produce to its full potential – the quality of the seed itself.
In addition to the Funk Seed brand, Funk Seed will distribute Syngenta’s new Innotech brand corn and soybean seed beginning this fall for the 2014 planting season. Funk Seed and Innotech corn and soybeans will feature elite Syngenta germplasm and high-performance trait technology to maximize yield potential. Available corn hybrids will feature top-performing Agrisure trait stacks and technology that are proven to deliver the results needed for a high-yield crop, such as the Agrisure Duracade and Agrisure Viptera traits and Agrisure Artesian technology. Funk Seed will also offer Genuity Roundup Ready 2 Yield technology through Innotech soybeans. Funk Seed and Innotech brand seed will be available to growers in Ohio, Michigan, Indiana, Illinois, Iowa, Wisconsin and Minnesota.
The Funk name has a long and significant history in the agricultural seed industry. In 1935, Edward J. Funk and his sons were pioneers in developing and bringing to market a new technology that would revolutionize the seed corn industry – “Hybrid Corn”.
Bill notes, “With the launch of new innovative technology available through the Innotech™ brand combined with the history and passion of the Funk name, Funk Seed once again plans to make an impact in agriculture in three ways: (1) return control of seed buying decisions to the hands of growers vs. seed companies, (2) simplify the complexity of the current seed market and (3) get back to forming trusting relationships and providing the knowledge and support necessary to enable growers to succeed.”
