If you believe in global warming, you are insane. That is the message that the Heartland Institute started professing with a billboard and advertising campaign to publicize its upcoming Seventh International Conference on Climate Change.
The campaign was a raw message with billboards showing Unabomber Ted Kaczynski and murderer Charles Manson next to messages, “I still believe in global warming do you?” The institute didn’t want to back down from its contention that only insane people like these killers believe that global warming is true, but the ad campaign has been withdrawn because the institute was losing membership/supporters.
The 28-year-old Heartland Institute claims to have 1,800 supporters (companies, individuals and associations) that support its mission “to discover, develop and promote free-market solutions to social and economic problems.”
Some of those supporters, of which there are several involved in agribusiness, have backed off from supporting the Heartland Institute because of its crass way of saying there is no science behind global warming and no need to have discussion of the evidence, other than anti-evidence of global warming.
The institute claims to have a 40-person full-time staff, split between Chicago and Washington, D.C. It uses information from free-enterprise advocates to put together material for six different monthly conservative public policy newspapers—Environment & Climate News, School Reform News, IT + Telecom News, Budget Tax News, Health Care News and Fire Policy News.
