DuPont has new insect control for growing cereals
Prevathon insect control powered by Rynaxypyr has received U.S. Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) registration for use on cereal crops, including wheat, most other small grains and sorghum.
Prevathon (prevathon.dupont.com) was first registered in 2011 for use on cotton, corn, pasture and hay crops, including alfalfa. Since then, in farm fields and research trials, Prevathon has demonstrated superior protection against a broad range of yield-robbing insects for many commercially grown crops including soybeans and sunflower. Prevathon provides control against lepidopteran worms, such as fall armyworm, true armyworm, corn earworm, sorghum webworm and loopers.
“With this newest registration on cereal crops and sorghum, growers now can use Prevathon for insect control across a full range of crops,” said James Hay, North America business director, DuPont Crop Protection. “Many of the worm pests that attack corn, soybeans, cotton and pastures or hay fields also attack sorghum and small grains. As these pests move from field to field and from one crop to another, Prevathon adds flexibility to a grower’s integrated pest management program while helping to protect developing crops.”
In addition to offering insect control, Prevathon helps break the insect resistance cycle with an alternate mode of action versus older insect protection standards, said Hay. “And, as with cotton and corn, we are seeing a high level of performance advantage for Prevathon. Three years of field trials versus other insect control products in sorghum showed Prevathon provides impressive management of fall armyworm, with nearly 100 percent worm control on sorghum heads 11 to 15 days after treatment and greater than 83 percent worm control in sorghum whorls five to seven days after treatment.
According to DuPont, growers will find multiple benefits with Prevathon use, including the following:
- Immediate cessation of insect feeding to protect crop yield and quality.
- Residual control for 14 to 21 days for application flexibility while reducing the need for repeat applications.
- Effective control of worm pests with minimal impact on beneficial predator insects and pollinators.*
- Another tool to help break the insect resistance cycle with a unique single mode of action versus conventional insect control products.
- No grazing or haying restrictions on range and pasture grasses and alfalfa, so applications can be made right up to cutting.
- Preharvest interval of 14 days on cereal crops and sorghum.
*In line with integrated pest management and good agricultural practices, insecticide applications should be made when pollinators are not foraging to avoid unnecessary exposure.
