Dakota Gas evaluates urea facility at Synfuels Plant

Dakota Gasification Company (Dakota Gas) has submitted an application to the North Dakota Department of Health for an environmental permit for a proposed urea production plant at its Great Plains Synfuels Plant near Beulah, N.D. This application is a key preliminary step as part of the investigation of the project. Urea, a granular fertilizer commonly used in agricultural applications, would mark the 10th co-product for the Synfuels Plant. Dakota Gas is a subsidiary of Basin Electric.

Dakota Gas is in the final stages of a Front-End Engineering and Design study for the production facility. Based on a successful FEED study and final board approval, the urea plant would be scheduled for completion in early 2017 and will produce 1,100 tons of urea daily.

“We’re excited about the potential to build on the fertilizer products we already produce, bringing more benefit to this nation’s agricultural customers,” said Andrew M. Serri, Dakota Gasification Company president and chief executive officer. The other agricultural fertilizers produced at the Synfuels Plant include anhydrous ammonia and ammonium sulfate (Dak Sul 45).

Serri said urea production requires anhydrous ammonia (made from natural gas) and carbon dioxide, all of which are manufactured in the plant’s process. He said urea has the highest nitrogen content of all solid nitrogen fertilizers, but costs less to handle, store and transport than other nitrogen-based fertilizers.

“We’ve been evaluating a number of products and processes designed to bring value to rural America. It’s important to note that a final decision has not yet been made to move forward with the urea project, and the submittal of the application for the environmental permit is another step in the evaluation of the project,” Serri said.
